How AI Is Changing User Interfaces?
Initially, we write commands to computers to do our work. Then came menus, buttons, icons to save our day. Now, the era of prompts has come.
Menus were there because the application or the software could not understand what you wanted. So, each application had to provide all the available actions via the way of menus to let the user select the action they wanted to perform. Menus reduced the need to memorise the commands.
We adapt to software
We have been adapting ourselves according to the software for many decades. This has been the comfortable way for the user to interact with the software for decades. To understand or operate any software, we need to figure out how it works, what are the shortcut keys to speed up our task, which menu contains the needed buttons, where the correct settings lies etc. If new software is released, overcoming the weaknesses of legacy software, we need to train ourselves to understand its workflow.
A typical CRM, for example, contains many settings inside the hundreds of menus. Employees had been spending many hours learning complex workflows, finding what other features exist in the software, and navigating large software systems. This learning and navigation overhead is one of the hidden costs of menus driven systems.
AI is adapting to us
What if instead of menus, tabs, settings, and buttons, users see a window free of menus? Just a single text box asking
what do you want to do?
This is exactly where software is moving today.
In the AI era, software is adapting to us. The interface of menus, buttons and icons is being increasingly complemented by natural language prompts. Just say,
“Export this word document into a pdf”.
And it is done. With this shift, users now need to spend little time learning menus, settings, and software usages. However, they still need to understand the capabilities that the software offers and verify its results.
So, user may specify their goals like :
Create a sales report
Analyze customer feedback
Create a beautiful presentation for annual sale budget
Many AI systems can determine the necessary steps and perform actions on your behalf. This capability is giving rise to a new form of AI assistant: the AI agent. These AI agents must have access to the required tools and permissions to take action on behalf of the users. Behind the scenes, AI may use menus, APIs, or other system interfaces to complete the task. Many times, the user may not need to know which settings, tools, or menu options were used behind the scenes.
With this shift, the new question is raised: Will the future be menu-free?
Will the future be menu-free?
Future may not be completely menu-free. But we may see lesser use of menus and tabs. While AI agents may become the primary interface for most tasks, menus may still be available for configuration, human review, and advanced user control.
But this shift comes with a huge cost. Building AI systems that can reliably understand and work on user requests is often more complex and resource-intensive than building traditional software with predefined menus and buttons. Building AI system is actually fundamentally different category of engineering problem.
Can AI agent become the new interface?
AI agents are beginning to change the way the people interact with software.. For many tasks, users no longer need to manually switch between multiple applications. The agent can handle this complexity on their behalf.
User do not need to open separate tools for research, document creation, data analysis, and reporting. They are increasingly rely on a single AI interface for this entire workflow.
Are menus completely vanishing?
Despite all the eyes around AI, menus are unlikely to vanish entirely. Because in many cases, people would like to have control and review. As AI is not 100% accurate and may make mistakes, the human review becomes necessary in critical domains like finance, healthcare, legal and others.
Conclusion
Menus have been the primary way to interact with the software. But agents are increasingly being adopted. AI agents are unlikely to completely replace menus. Menus will remain essential for adjusting parameters, settings, and human review. An agent can sometimes misunderstand user intent. And in critical areas like finance, healthcare, etc ; even a few margin of errors are unacceptable. So future is not without menus but with both- menus and AI coordinating together for the user.
